Most loft conversions and
some dormer conversions do not require Planning Permission
However a loft for habitable use does require Building
Regulations Approval (pass BCO inspection). For this, building
plans are needed for Building Control Officer inspection which
specify what and where work is planned. The Building Control
Officer inspects not only plans but the work at stages of
development according to these plans, and then passed the work
if it conforms to standards.
Usually, only lofts that require significant structural
alteration, are within conservation areas, or have dormer
windows require Planning Permission.
